The Boat

Meet Soltara…

Soltara is a Tayana 37, a 37 foot double-ender designed by American yacht designer, Robert Perry. She was built in 1981 by Ta Yang Yacht Building Company in Taiwan. She measures 36’8″ overall, with a waterline length of 31′. The Tayana 37’s classic, wooden bowsprit and teak accents give her a salty look that sends many sailors wistfully longing to untie the lines and sail away in search of distant shores.

Once a sailor catches a glimpse of the interior of the Tayana, it is often love at first sight. The joinery is most impressive, a great deal of warm teak and of solid build. Storage abounds, allowing for all of those provisions and spares that are needed for longer voyages.

The Tayana 37 was a big hit in the nautical scene when the first boats were built in the mid 1970s, so much so that over 600 have been built. Many have made ocean crossings, and many have circumnavigated. Ta Yang offered many options with the design and it is said that no two Tayana 37’s are the same. Some were built with a cutter rig and others with a ketch rig. Our Soltara is a cutter.

Our Tayana’s first owner and caretaker was Tom Veal. We have not had the honor of meeting Tom, but we understand that he had his new Tayana 37 shipped from Taiwan to the USA. He sailed from Texas, all the way down to Grenada. (If you know Tom, please send him our info as we would love to get in touch with him to learn more about our boat’s history). We aren’t sure of Tom’s exact story or sailing adventures, but we do know that he owned the boat until 2001, when he passed her on to her second owner and caretaker, Gary Davis.

We do have the honor of knowing Gary, having purchased this beautiful classic from him in Trinidad. Gary and his wife, Barbara sailed her throughout both the Eastern and Western Caribbean until 2019, when they passed her on to us.

We feel so very lucky to have found this stunning lady, and look forward caring for her as she takes us to places we dream of sailing to.
